History
Exodus is an American thrash metal band formed in San Francisco in 1980, one of the genre's founding acts alongside fellow Bay Area outfits Metallica and Testament. Early guitarist Kirk Hammett left in 1983 to join Metallica and was replaced by Rick Hunolt; guitarist Gary Holt, who joined within the band's first year, has remained its sole constant member ever since. Fronted by singer Paul Baloff, Exodus built its sound on relentless riffing pulled from Motorhead and NWOBHM bands like Iron Maiden, fused with the raw energy of Bay Area punk. Their 1985 debut, Bonded by Blood, is regarded as one of the most influential thrash records ever made; the title track supposedly grew out of the band members cutting their hands and mixing blood after a late night of drinking. Momentum faded with grunge's rise and the band split in 1995, reforming in 2001; Baloff died of a stroke in 2002. Exodus has kept releasing albums since, most recently Persona Non Grata (2021). Holt has also played guitar for Slayer since 2011.
