History
Progressive metal welds the loud, distorted guitar attack of heavy metal to the long forms, odd meters and unusual harmonies of progressive rock. The roots are older than the name: King Crimson hardened their sound on 21st Century Schizoid Man, and Rush, who started out under the spell of Led Zeppelin, joined prog technique to blues-based power chords on 2112 in 1976. The style itself took shape in the American scene of the 1980s, where Fates Warning and Queensryche merged a love of Yes and Rush with admiration for Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Thrash absorbed prog as well, with Metallica folding it into Master of Puppets. The breakthrough came in the early 1990s: Queensryche's Silent Lucidity became an unexpected radio and MTV hit, and Dream Theater went worldwide with Pull Me Under from Images and Words (1992). King's X, who mixed in hard rock and funk, left such a mark on grunge that Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam once said they invented it. From there the genre branched out: Tool with Lateralus, Opeth with death metal growls, and in the 2000s djent, a polyrhythmic, mathematically precise offshoot with Meshuggah among its names.
