History

Polyphia took instrumental guitar music away from the shred circuit and gave it the rhythm section of a rap record. The two guitarists trade clean, glassy lines full of tapping and wide interval leaps, while the drums and bass underneath come out of trap, and the songs are built from short hooks rather than from long solos. The early material sat inside progressive metal and djent. By New Levels New Devils most of the distortion had gone and what remained was precision, groove and a lot of space. G.O.A.T. became the track guitarists learn in order to prove a point, and Goose showed how much melody the approach could carry. Remember That You Will Die pushed further out, with nylon-string flamenco figures, guest rappers and orchestral detail sharing the same three minutes, and Playing God turned a finger-picked pattern into something close to a pop hook. They came out of Texas and grew through video as much as radio. The recognisable element is the tone, bright, dry and almost synthetic.
