History
Post-metal took shape in the US and Britain in the early 1990s, when bands raised on hardcore and industrial music started slowing metal down and stretching it out. The groundwork came from the Melvins, whose Bullhead arrived in 1991, from Justin Broadrick of Napalm Death and Godflesh, and from Tool, whose music was called post-metal as early as 1993. Neurosis' Souls at Zero and Godflesh's Pure, both from 1992, are usually named the first post-metal records, and Neurosis' Through Silver in Blood (1996) has been credited with inventing the genre. The songs run long, often six to eleven minutes, and drop verse and chorus for crescendos and repeating themes; guitars go through chains of effects, and screamed or growled vocals sit in the mix like one more instrument. Post-rock pulled the two closer, through bands such as Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor that shared metal's appetite for volume. In 1997 Aaron Turner, founder of Hydra Head Records, formed Isis, and their 2002 album Oceanic became the genre's classic and a model for Cult of Luna and Russian Circles. Later Alcest and then Deafheaven fused black metal with shoegaze, nicknamed blackgaze, and Deafheaven's acclaim pulled the whole underground into view.
