History

Cult of Luna build songs like slow-moving weather. The band formed in Umeå, in the north of Sweden, at the end of the 1990s, a city with a strong hardcore scene, and that background still shows in the roared vocals and the physical weight of the riffs. What set them apart was scale: two or three guitars, keyboards and heavy, patient drumming stacked into long pieces that build over many minutes, fall back into quiet, then rise again. Salvation in 2004 and Somewhere Along the Highway in 2006 established them as one of the key European names in what came to be called post-metal, alongside the American bands who pioneered the form. Vertikal in 2013 took inspiration from the film Metropolis and brought colder, more mechanical, synth-tinged textures into the sound. Later work continued to explore that balance, including a collaboration album with the singer Julie Christmas. A listener recognises Cult of Luna by the sheer density of the guitar layers, the repetitive, hypnotic build-ups and the sense of a landscape rather than a song, vast, grey and slowly shifting.
