History

Napalm Death took hardcore punk to the point where it stopped being punk, compressing songs into seconds and replacing the beat with a blastbeat played until the drums read as a single sheet of noise. They came out of the English Midlands and their first album, Scum, is the record usually credited with turning that approach into grindcore as a named style. You Suffer is the extreme case, a song short enough to be over before most listeners register that it began, and it remains the band's best known joke and best known statement at the same time. From Suffer the Children onward the writing slowed enough to let death metal riffing in, and later records added mid-tempo sections, industrial textures and a vocal range that runs from a low growl to a shredded high scream. The lyrics stayed political throughout, aimed at class, consumption and state violence rather than at horror imagery, which is part of why the band kept credibility in punk circles long after the metal audience claimed them.
