History
Lantlôs is a German project led by multi-instrumentalist Markus Siegenhort that became one of the defining early names in blackgaze before steadily leaving black metal behind. The early records mixed raw black metal with melancholy post-rock, and on .neon in 2010 and Agape in 2011 the vocals came from Neige of the French band Alcest, which tied Lantlôs closely to the same current of dreamy, reverb-heavy metal. .neon in particular is remembered for its nocturnal, urban mood, with long songs that feel like walking through a city at night, heavy but hazy and introspective. After Neige's departure Siegenhort took over the vocals himself, and Melting Sun in 2014 dropped harsh singing almost entirely in favour of warm, washed-out guitars, clean voice and a sound closer to shoegaze and dream pop than to metal. Later work moved even further toward alternative rock. Lantlôs is recognised by thick, blurred guitar textures, a strong sense of atmosphere over riffs, and the way each album changes shape rather than repeating the one before.
