History

Tool built a sound on patience and mathematics: songs that stretch past seven minutes, drum parts in shifting time signatures, and a guitar tone that stays dry and heavy rather than bright. The Los Angeles band arrived in the early 1990s alongside grunge and alternative metal, but the writing pulled toward progressive rock, with riffs that cycle through odd meters and vocal lines from Maynard James Keenan that move from a low mutter to a full shout without warning. Danny Carey's drumming is the engine, dense with polyrhythm and tuned percussion. Undertow and Aenima turned them into an arena act, and Lateralus pushed the approach further, building structures out of numeric patterns and letting tracks unfold in long sections instead of verses and choruses. The band avoided showing their faces, releasing stop-motion videos instead, and left years between albums. Listeners recognise them by the crawling tension of the build and by a release that arrives later than expected.
