History

Filter built their sound on the collision of industrial machinery and big alternative-rock choruses: programmed, grinding rhythms, walls of distorted guitar and a singer who can go from a mutter to a full-throated scream inside one verse. The project was formed in Cleveland by Richard Patrick, who had played guitar in the touring lineup of Nine Inch Nails, together with Brian Liesegang. Their debut Short Bus arrived in 1995 and broke through on the strength of "Hey Man Nice Shot", a tense, slowly building track that became a fixture of mid-nineties rock radio. Liesegang left afterwards, and Title of Record in 1999 showed a wider range: alongside the heavy material sat "Take a Picture", a hushed, melodic song that became the band's biggest hit and proved Patrick could write far beyond the industrial template. Filter sit on the line between alt-metal and industrial rock, and listeners know them by that loud-quiet tension, the mechanical pulse under the riffs and Patrick's raw, strained voice.
