History
Industrial metal formed in the late 1980s, when industrial music, whose archetypal acts had been openly hostile to rock, began to fuse with heavy metal. Killing Joke and Big Black had already crossed the line, but the records that set the genre going were Godflesh's self-titled EP and Ministry's The Land of Rape and Honey. The sound of Godflesh, started by former Napalm Death guitarist Justin Broadrick, was once summed up as Pornography-era The Cure on Quaaludes. Ministry's Al Jourgensen had not touched a guitar in five years when he heard feedback from a Marshall stack at Southern Studios in London and felt the possibilities were endless. KMFDM's Sascha Konietzko, no metal fan, looped riffs on an E-mu Emax sampler because he hated how metal played its best riff once and never again. Repeated riffs, samples, sequencers and distorted vocals remain its core. Nine Inch Nails took it to the mainstream with Broken, The Downward Spiral and a set at Woodstock '94, while Rammstein, Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie also did well in the 1990s. Thrash bands such as Megadeth and Sepultura asked industrial artists for remixes, and in the early 2000s black metal took up industrial elements too.
