History

Code Orange took metallic hardcore in a harsher, stranger direction, mixing crushing breakdowns and sludgy riffs with industrial noise, glitches and abrupt electronic cuts. The band formed in Pittsburgh while its members were still teenagers and first recorded as Code Orange Kids, playing fast, chaotic hardcore before slowing down and getting heavier. I Am King, released on Deathwish in 2014, marked that shift with a colder, more oppressive sound. Forever, their first album for Roadrunner, brought them to a much larger metal audience, and its title track earned a Grammy nomination. Underneath, released in 2020, pushed further into industrial territory, with stuttering edits, samples and sudden silences that make the songs feel as if they were breaking apart. Drummer and vocalist Jami Morgan and guitarist and vocalist Reba Meyers became the most visible faces of the group. A listener recognises Code Orange by the lurching, mid-tempo breakdowns, distorted electronic textures, and a production style that treats sudden jump cuts as part of the riff.
