History

Prong play a hard, clipped hybrid of thrash, hardcore and industrial, built on chugging, rhythmically tight riffs and shouted vocals rather than speed for its own sake. The band came out of New York in the mid-eighties, led by guitarist and singer Tommy Victor, who had worked the sound desk at CBGB and absorbed the city's hardcore and noise scenes first-hand. Beg to Differ in 1990 was their major-label debut and already showed the groove-driven, economical approach that set them apart from the thrash of the time. By Cleansing in 1994 the sound had absorbed more industrial texture and a cold, mechanical precision, and "Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck" became the track most people know them by. Rude Awakening in 1996 pushed further in the same direction before the band went quiet for several years. Victor later revived Prong and kept recording, while also playing guitar for Danzig and Ministry. At its core the band is about stiff, interlocking riffs and metal played with hardcore discipline.
