History
Machine Head is an American heavy metal band formed in Oakland, California, on October 12, 1991, by vocalist/guitarist Robb Flynn and bassist Adam Duce, after Flynn left the Bay Area thrash bands Vio-lence and Forbidden. The founding lineup also included guitarist Logan Mader and drummer Tony Costanza. Fusing thrash metal with groove and hardcore aggression, the band became a pioneer of what's often called the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. Their 1994 debut, Burn My Eyes, is regarded as a genre landmark, and 2007's The Blackening is widely ranked among the greatest metal albums of the 21st century, winning Album of the Year at both the Metal Hammer Golden Gods and Kerrang! Awards. Its lead single, "Aesthetics of Hate," earned the band's only Grammy nomination, for Best Metal Performance in 2008, written as a direct response to a journalist who had praised the murder of Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell. Flynn remains the band's sole original member; the current lineup includes longtime guitarist Phil Demmel, drummer Dave McClain, and bassist Jared MacEachern.
