History

Marilyn Manson built a sound on down-tuned guitars, drum machines and a voice that alternates between a dry sneer and a shredded scream. The band came together in south Florida at the start of the 1990s, took its stage names by pairing Hollywood glamour with notorious killers, and was picked up by Trent Reznor, who produced the record that made them famous. Antichrist Superstar set that formula: industrial rhythm tracks, guitars used as texture as much as riffs, and lyrics arranged as a narrative about a nobody turning into a demagogue. Mechanical Animals pushed the same machinery toward glam, with cleaner choruses, synthesisers and a different persona on the cover, and The Dope Show came out of that turn. The cover of Sweet Dreams remade a synth-pop standard as something menacing and slow, and it stayed in the live set for decades. Through the late 1990s the group was the target of a running moral panic in the American press, which the act absorbed and used as material.
