History
Megadeth is an American thrash metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by guitarist and vocalist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, shortly after Mustaine was fired from Metallica. The band's name comes from a phrase about a "megadeath arsenal" that Mustaine spotted on a discarded political pamphlet during the bus ride home. Alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, Megadeth became known as one of the "Big Four" bands that defined American thrash metal. After the 1985 debut Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!, the band built its reputation with the technically intricate 1990 album Rust in Peace, featuring guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza, and the 1992 Countdown to Extinction, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and produced the hit single "Symphony of Destruction." Despite eleven Grammy nominations dating back to 1990, Megadeth did not win a Grammy until 2017, when Dystopia took Best Metal Performance.
