History
Sepultura formed in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1984, founded by teenage brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. Early lineups included vocalist Wagner Lamounier and guitarist Jairo Guedz before the band settled around Max, Igor, bassist Paulo Jr., and guitarist Andreas Kisser, who joined in 1987 and remains a member today. Debut album Morbid Visions (1986) drew on Black Sabbath and Motorhead before the band pushed into thrash and death metal on Beneath the Remains (1989) and Arise (1991), then groove metal on Chaos A.D. (1993). Their best-known record, Roots (1996), fused metal with Brazilian rhythms: the band spent two days recording with the Xavante indigenous tribe in Mato Grosso, whose chants and percussion appear throughout the album. Max Cavalera left in 1996 and was replaced by Derrick Green in 1997; Igor departed in 2006. MTV has called Sepultura the most successful Brazilian heavy metal band in history, with global sales near 20 million and multiple gold and platinum certifications, and their sound has influenced acts like Slipknot, Korn, and Gojira.
