History

Chon play bright, clean-toned instrumental math rock, built on fast tapped guitar lines, jazz-fusion chords and a relaxed, sunny mood that sets them apart from the heavier end of the progressive scene. The band came out of Oceanside in Southern California, and their early EPs spread quickly online, where videos of intricate two-guitar interplay found an audience among young guitarists. Grow, their 2015 debut album, established the template: short, busy pieces full of hammer-ons and sweeping runs, yet light and melodic rather than aggressive. Homey in 2017 widened the palette with electronic textures and a looser, more laid-back feel, and the self-titled record in 2019 continued in that softer direction. Chon became one of the central names in the 2010s wave of American math rock that also included bands like Covet and Polyphia, and they toured widely with that circle. Listeners recognise them by the glassy guitar tone, the constant melodic motion, odd meters that still feel easy, and an overall warmth that sounds closer to summer afternoons than to a mosh pit.
