History

TTNG make intricate, bright math rock in which the guitar does most of the talking: open tunings, finger-tapped patterns that ring like a keyboard, and melodies that move through shifting time signatures without ever sounding stiff. The band formed in Oxford, England, originally under the name This Town Needs Guns, and later shortened it to TTNG. Their debut album Animals, released in 2008 on Big Scary Monsters, is known for song titles named after animals and became a reference point for the tapping-heavy branch of math rock and emo. After a change of singer, 13.0.0.0.0 arrived in 2013 on Sargent House, and Disappointment Island followed in 2016. Although they are British, their sound fits closely with the Midwest emo tradition, and they found a large audience in the United States. A listener recognises TTNG by the clean, sparkling guitar that carries both rhythm and melody, the busy but light-footed drumming and a calm, conversational vocal floating over music that is anything but simple.
