History

A trio out of Springfield, Missouri that resettled in Houston, King's X worked for years under other names before Sam Taylor took them on as producer and manager. Doug Pinnick sings and plays a down-tuned twelve-string bass, Ty Tabor plays guitar, Jerry Gaskill drums, and all three sing, which is the point: the riffs are heavy and detuned while the vocals sit in three-part harmony learned in church. Out of the Silent Planet appeared in 1988, Gretchen Goes to Nebraska in 1989 and Faith Hope Love in 1990, the last carrying It's Love, the song that got them radio and video rotation. They played Woodstock '94. Commercially they stayed a cult band, but musicians kept naming them, with members of Pearl Jam and Dream Theater among those who have credited the group. The combination of gospel harmony and low-tuned groove had few precedents when they started using it.
