History
Dream Theater formed among students at Berklee and carried that origin into the music: long compositions, changing time signatures, written instrumental sections that function like movements rather than solos, all played with metal weight rather than fusion lightness. Images and Words is the record that defined the template, and Pull Me Under is the unlikely radio track inside it, a song in an odd meter with a chorus that still works on first listen. Metropolis Pt. 1 set up the band's habit of returning to its own material across albums, and The Dance of Eternity is close to a thesis statement: minutes of unison writing through constant meter changes with no vocal at all. John Petrucci's guitar tone and phrasing became a reference point for a generation of players, and the group's approach shaped almost every progressive metal band that followed. They won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2022. Listeners recognise the combination of technical density with genuinely melodic, clean singing.
