History
The Contortionist began as a technical deathcore band and steadily turned into one of the more atmospheric names in progressive metal. The group comes from Indianapolis, Indiana, and its early material paired djent-style polyrhythms with harsh vocals and dense, busy arrangements. Exoplanet in 2010 already showed the direction: long songs about space and distance, ambient passages between the heavy parts, and clean guitar textures that gave the riffs room to breathe. Intrinsic in 2012 leaned further into melody, and the albums that followed, with Mike Lessard on vocals, moved toward spacious progressive rock where screaming became the exception rather than the rule. Guitarists Robby Baca and Cameron Maynard shaped much of that change, favouring layered clean tones and patient builds over constant aggression. A listener recognises The Contortionist by shimmering, reverb-heavy guitars, grooves in odd meters that feel smooth rather than jagged, and a dreamlike, science-fiction mood that stays calm even when the music turns heavy.
