History
Shadows Fall formed in 1996 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and became one of the defining bands of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. Early on they leaned toward melodic death metal in the Gothenburg style, with future All That Remains vocalist Philip Labonte fronting their 1997 debut before Brian Fair took over on vocals. The classic lineup crystallized around Fair, guitarists Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand, bassist Paul Romanko, and drummer Jason Bittner, who joined full-time in 2002. That year's The Art of Balance marked their break from melodeath comparisons into a thrash-tinged sound built on twin-guitar leads, Fair's screams, and Bachand's clean vocals. The 2004 album The War Within sold over 300,000 copies, hit No. 20 on the Billboard 200, and became Century Media's best-selling release. In 2005 Shadows Fall became the first NWOAHM band to play Ozzfest's main stage. The band earned two Grammy nominations for Best Metal Performance ("What Drives the Weak," "Redemption"), and guitarist Donais later joined Anthrax in 2013.
