History
Sabbat were an English thrash metal band formed in Nottingham in 1985, initially performing as Hydra before adopting the Sabbat name. The classic lineup featured vocalist Martin Walkyier, guitarists Andy Sneap and Simon Jones, bassist Frazer Craske and drummer Simon Negus. Signed to the German label Noise Records, the band recorded its 1988 debut, "History of a Time to Come," in Hannover; the deal reportedly could not be finalized until Sneap turned 18. Sabbat is often ranked among the "Big Four" of British thrash alongside Onslaught, Xentrix and Acid Reign, distinguished by Walkyier's rapid-fire, venomous vocal delivery and lyrics steeped in pagan and folk themes rather than the horror or war tropes common in the genre. Their acclaimed second album, "Dreamweaver (Reflections of Our Yesterdays)" (1989), pushed the band toward a more progressive, folk-infused sound. After 1991's "Mourning Has Broken," internal tensions ended the band; Walkyier went on to found Skyclad, and Sneap became a prominent metal record producer.
