History
Sodom is a German thrash metal band formed in 1982 in Gelsenkirchen, in the coal-mining Ruhr region. Bassist and vocalist Tom Angelripper has been the only constant member through decades of lineup changes; guitarist Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik, who joined in 1987, shaped the band's classic sound before leaving for Kreator in 1989 and later rejoining in 2018. Alongside Kreator, Destruction, and Tankard, Sodom is considered one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal, and is also credited as an early influence on black metal and death metal. Early releases like In the Sign of Evil (1986) leaned into raw, satanic black-thrash, while Persecution Mania (1987) shifted the lyrics toward war, politics, and history. Their breakthrough, Agent Orange (1989), sold 100,000 copies in Germany and became one of the first thrash albums to chart there, remaining the best-selling German thrash album to date. Sodom has released sixteen studio albums, the most recent being The Arsonist (2025), and has sold over two million records worldwide.
