History
Master (Мастер) formed in Moscow in April 1987, when bassist Alik Granovsky, guitarist Andrey Bolshakov, keyboardist Kirill Pokrovsky, and drummer Igor Molchanov left the pioneering heavy metal band Aria after creative disputes with its producer, Viktor Vekshtein. Vocalist Mikhail Seryshev joined soon after. Where Aria leaned toward NWOBHM-style heavy metal, Master pushed into faster, harder speed and thrash metal, drawing on Western influences like Metallica and Megadeth and becoming one of the acts that defined Soviet thrash. Their self-titled debut album, released on the state label Melodiya in 1987/1988, reportedly sold in the range of a million copies, a striking figure for an underground metal record at the time. Granovsky is the band's sole constant member through decades of lineup changes; the group later relocated to Belgium in the early 1990s and toured extensively there. Two founding members have since died: keyboardist Kirill Pokrovsky in 2015 and drummer Igor Molchanov in 2023. Master remains active, releasing the album Мастер времени in 2020.
