History
Annihilator has effectively been one person since Jeff Waters formed it in Ottawa in the mid-1980s. He writes the material, plays most of the guitar, and has cycled through a long list of singers and rhythm sections around himself. Alice in Hell (1989) is the record the band gets measured against: Randy Rampage, previously of the Vancouver hardcore group D.O.A., shouting over riffs built from neoclassical intervals and picked with a precision that was unusual in thrash at the time. Never Neverland followed in 1990 with Coburn Pharr, and Set the World on Fire (1993) brought Aaron Randall and a cleaner, more melodic vocal. The line-up churn became the band's second trait; Waters has more than once ended up recording bass and vocals himself. Sales have always been stronger in Europe and Japan than in North America, and the albums have kept arriving at a steady pace for over three decades.
