Style recipe for Suno v5
Drill
Drill beat from the 2020s: sliding sub glide, brassy orchestral stab, skeletal snare crack, menacing and swaggering in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Drill started on Chicago's South Side in the early 2010s, taking its sound from trap and its subject matter from gangsta rap. Much of the culture, from slang and dances to the music itself, came out of Dro City, a gang territory in the Woodlawn neighbourhood, and Dro City rapper Pac Man first tied the street word "drill", meaning to fight or retaliate, to the local music with his 2010 track "It's a Drill". Producers such as Young Chop built the beats from synth brass, bells, crash cymbals and busy snares, while rappers delivered threats in a flat, deadpan voice, often through Auto-Tune. Chief Keef broke the scene nationally in 2012 and signed with Interscope at 16; he has said he skips metaphors on purpose because he would rather say what is going on right now. Lil Durk rose alongside him, and Polo G and King Von carried a second wave in the late 2010s. Britain then built its own UK drill with faster tempos and sliding 808s, which in turn shaped Brooklyn drill and the early-2020s rise of Pop Smoke and Fivio Foreign. By 2021 the BBC was calling drill the sound of the global youth.
