History

22Gz is credited as one of the rappers who started Brooklyn drill, the New York branch of the style that took its sound straight from London. Born Jeffrey Alexander and raised in Flatbush, he is of Guyanese descent and began as a showtime dancer on the subway before putting songs on SoundCloud as a teenager. His 2016 singles "Blixky" and "Suburban" spread through YouTube, and "Suburban", produced by the London beatmaker AXL Beats, is regarded as one of the first Brooklyn drill songs to break out. That link to UK producers defined the local sound: sliding 808 bass, skittering hi-hats, tense minor-key melodies and a slower, stalking bounce than Chicago drill. Atlantic signed him in 2018, and The Blixky Tape followed in 2019, then Growth & Development in 2020. His delivery is aggressive and clipped, with barked ad-libs and chant-like hooks built for crowds. Listeners know him by that militant energy, the Blixky tag and the early template he laid down before Pop Smoke took the sound worldwide.
