History
41 is a Brooklyn trio that helped pull Brooklyn drill back into the spotlight in the early 2020s with a lighter, faster, sample-heavy take on the sound. Kyle Richh and Jenn Carter grew up together in Brownsville and began recording on the BandLab phone app during the pandemic; TaTa, also from Brownsville, joined after a studio session in 2021. Their first single, "41 Cypher", came out in January 2022, and their episode of the On the Radar cypher series became one of its most watched, which critics pointed to as their breakout. Republic signed them that year. The group became known, and heavily criticised, for "Notti Bop", a viral diss aimed at a slain teenage rapper. Musically they belong to the sample drill wave: recognisable pop and R&B hooks flipped over bouncing drill drums, with three voices trading short, playful verses and shouted ad-libs. "Bent", the lead single from the 2023 EP 41 World: Not the Album, became their biggest song. Listeners recognise them by the rapid back-and-forth between three rappers and the catchy samples underneath.
