History
Bandmanrill is the Newark rapper who put drill verses on top of Jersey club beats and gave the blend a name people could point to. Jersey club, the fast, chopped dance style of Newark with its kick patterns and bed-squeak samples, had long been a DJ and dance culture; Bandmanrill rapped over it with the flat, menacing delivery of drill, and the result sounded both local and new. His breakout came in 2021 with Heartbroken, which spread quickly online and was picked out by Pitchfork as a must-hear rap song. Later that year Tonight's Da Night Freestyle kept the momentum, and Real Hips followed in 2022. He signed with 100%Pure and Warner, and his debut project Club Godfather arrived in October 2022 with guests including NLE Choppa, Lay Bankz and Sha EK. His role in the scene is that of a bridge: he brought Jersey club tempos into rap and drill energy into the club. You can pick him out by the bouncing triplet kicks, sampled vocal chops and his steady, low-key flow riding a beat built for dancing.
