History
Tankard formed in Frankfurt, West Germany, in 1982, when three classmates -- bassist-turned-vocalist Andreas "Gerre" Geremia, guitarist Axel Katzmann and Frank Thorwarth on bass -- started jamming together. Alongside Kreator, Destruction and Sodom, they became known as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal, though Tankard set itself apart by singing almost exclusively about beer and drinking rather than death, war or politics. After two underground demos, they signed to Noise Records and released their debut album, Zombie Attack, in 1986, followed by Chemical Invasion the next year. The band has since put out 18 studio albums, moving through Century Media, AFM and Nuclear Blast, with Geremia and Thorwarth as the only members present since day one. A favorite trivia point: at their very first gig, in a school classroom in 1983, they smuggled beer past a strict alcohol ban by hiding it in milk cartons.
