History
Sepultura is a Brazilian metal band formed in 1984 in Belo Horizonte by brothers Max Cavalera (guitar, later vocals) and Igor Cavalera (drums). Once guitarist Andreas Kisser and bassist Paulo Jr. rounded out the lineup, the band moved from raw death/thrash metal toward a more structured extreme-metal sound. Their 1989 album Beneath the Remains, the first for Roadrunner Records, became their international breakthrough. The 1990s were Sepultura's creative peak: Arise (1991) pushed their thrash sound to its limit and is now considered one of their finest records; Chaos A.D. (1993) slowed the tempo for a heavier, groove-driven, more industrial sound; and Roots (1996) wove in Brazilian tribal percussion and indigenous instrumentation, becoming Max Cavalera's final album with the band before his departure that same year. Sepultura has sold roughly 20 million albums worldwide, including over 3 million in the United States. Beneath the Remains, Arise, and Roots were all later inducted into Decibel magazine's Hall of Fame, making Sepultura the first band with three albums to receive that honor.
