History
Chimaira formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in August 1998, built around vocalist Mark Hunter, who remained the band's only constant member through a long string of line-up changes. Early on the group leaned into nu metal, and its 2001 debut album Pass Out of Existence featured a guest guitar spot from Deftones' Stephen Carpenter. From 2003's The Impossibility of Reason onward, Chimaira shed the electronics and 7-string riffing for a rawer, groove-metal-driven attack, a sound that carried through Resurrection (2007) and The Infection (2009), which debuted at number 30 on the Billboard 200. Longtime members included guitarists Rob Arnold and Matt DeVries, bassist Jim LaMarca, and electronics player Chris Spicuzza, alongside drummer Andols Herrick, who cycled in and out of the band three times. A trivia note: a couple of Chimaira songs turned up as background music on an episode of MythBusters. The band split in September 2014, staged a one-off reunion in 2017, and reformed fully in 2023.
