History
Godsmack is an American rock band formed in Lawrence/Boston, Massachusetts, in 1995 by singer-guitarist Sully Erna, who had spent over two decades as a drummer before stepping up to the mic. Blending alternative metal, hard rock, and post-grunge, the band built its name (a coincidental nod to a shared cold sore, not the Alice in Chains song) through relentless local gigging. Their 1998 self-titled debut, recorded independently for just $2,600 and later re-released via Universal/Republic, went on to sell 5 million copies. Bassist Robbie Merrill has been with Erna since day one; guitarist Tony Rombola and drummer Shannon Larkin later became long-running members. Godsmack scored three consecutive number-one Billboard 200 albums (Faceless, IV, The Oracle) and racked up 25 top-ten mainstream rock radio hits, 12 of them number one. The instrumental track "Vampires," from 2000's Awake, earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. In 2014, Boston's mayor declared August 6 "Godsmack Day" in the band's honor.
