History
Pantera formed in Arlington, Texas, in 1981, founded by brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums), soon joined by bassist Rex Brown. After three glam-metal albums with singer Terry Glaze in the mid-1980s, the band recruited vocalist Phil Anselmo in 1986 and shifted toward a heavier sound. Cowboys from Hell (1990), which Pantera later called its true debut, helped popularize the groove metal subgenre, and Vulgar Display of Power (1992) pushed the style further. Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, an unusual feat for a band this extreme. Pantera has sold around 20 million records worldwide and earned four Grammy nominations, making it one of the most influential heavy metal acts of the 1990s. The band effectively ended after Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage in 2004; Vinnie Paul died in 2018. In 2022, surviving members Anselmo and Brown announced a reunion tour with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante filling in on guitar and drums.
