History

The Down Troddence fuse thrash and groove metal with the folk traditions of northern Kerala, above all the ritual art form Theyyam, whose drums, chants and imagery run through their songs. The band formed in 2009 in Kannur district as a studio project called Ultimatum, started by guitarist Varun Raj and vocalist Munz, and later brought in keyboardist Sushin Shyam, who went on to become a well-known film composer in Malayalam cinema. Their debut album How Are You? We Are Fine, Thank You arrived in 2014 and won Best Album and Best Band at the Rolling Stone India Metal Awards, marking them as one of the leading acts of Indian folk metal. After a pause they returned with "Fight. React. Be a Part!" in 2019. Lyrically they deal with social injustice, caste discrimination and the struggles of marginalised communities. Listeners recognise them by the percussive Kerala rhythms under heavy riffs and the pairing of ritual chanting with aggressive vocals.
