History

Three quarters of Creed regrouped in 2004 with a different singer, which is the simplest way to place this band: Mark Tremonti on guitar, Brian Marshall on bass, Scott Phillips on drums, plus Myles Kennedy, previously of The Mayfield Four. One Day Remains came out that same year. Blackbird (2007) is the record the audience treats as the reference point, largely for the title track, an eight-minute piece whose closing dual guitar solo keeps turning up in guitar magazines' best-solo polls. Tremonti writes in drop tunings with a thick, tightly palm-muted attack, and Kennedy sings high and clean over it, with enough range to pull the vocal line away from where a post-grunge chorus would put it. AB III (2010) and Fortress (2013) pushed further toward metal. Kennedy has spent the parallel years fronting Slash's solo band, which keeps the two projects distinct rather than blurred.
