History
Coldplay are a British rock band formed in London in 1997. Chris Martin (vocals, piano) and Jonny Buckland (guitar) met at University College London in September 1996; bassist Guy Berryman joined months later, and drummer Will Champion completed the lineup in January 1998. After early names like Big Fat Noises and Starfish, they settled on Coldplay and self-financed the Safety EP before signing to Parlophone in 1999. Their debut album, Parachutes (2000), broke through with the single "Yellow" and won a Brit Award and a Grammy. A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X&Y (2005), and Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008) followed, the latter's title track becoming the first UK act's song to hit number one simultaneously in the US and UK in the 21st century. Later albums such as Mylo Xyloto, Ghost Stories, and Music of the Spheres explored electronica, R&B, and ambient sounds. With over 160 million records sold, Coldplay hold the record for most UK Albums Chart number ones without missing the top spot (10), and their Music of the Spheres World Tour became the first by a band to gross over $1 billion.
