History
Thin Lizzy formed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1969, built around bassist, singer, and chief songwriter Phil Lynott and drummer Brian Downey, who had known each other since school. Early guitarist Eric Bell was later replaced by a rotating cast that included Gary Moore, Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham, Snowy White, and John Sykes, with Darren Wharton adding keyboards from 1980. Their sound fused hard rock and blues rock with Irish folk influences, twin-guitar harmonies, and Lynott's storytelling lyrics. Across a fourteen-year, twelve-album run they scored international hits with "Whiskey in the Jar" (1972), "The Boys Are Back in Town" (1976), and "Waiting for an Alibi" (1979). Their 1978 concert album Live and Dangerous was later named the greatest live album of all time by Classic Rock magazine. Lynott, of Irish and Guyanese heritage, was the first Black Irish musician to achieve major rock success; the band itself drew members from both sides of the Irish border and from both Catholic and Protestant communities during the Troubles. Lynott died in 1986, but Gorham has led various reunion lineups since.
