History
Aerosmith formed in Boston in October 1970, when guitarist Joe Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton joined singer Steven Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano, who was replaced by Brad Whitford the following year. That lineup, Tyler, Perry, Hamilton, Kramer, and Whitford, became the band's classic core. Signed to Columbia Records in 1972, Aerosmith built a hard rock sound rooted in blues, and broke through with 1975's Toys in the Attic and 1976's Rocks, charting hits like "Sweet Emotion," "Dream On," and "Walk This Way." After a slump and Perry's departure in the early 1980s, the band reunited, got sober, and had a second commercial peak, aided by Run-D.M.C.'s 1986 rap cover of "Walk This Way," then multiplatinum albums Permanent Vacation, Pump, and Get a Grip. Nicknamed "the Bad Boys from Boston," Aerosmith is widely cited as the best-selling American rock band ever, with reported sales above 150 million albums worldwide.
