History

Van Halen formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972, built around guitarist Eddie Van Halen, his brother Alex on drums, singer David Lee Roth, and bassist Michael Anthony. Credited with restoring hard rock to the mainstream, the band was best known for high-energy live shows and Eddie's virtuoso guitar playing, which pioneered tapping techniques that reshaped rock guitar. Their 1978 self-titled debut eventually went Diamond in the US, and 1984 produced "Jump," the band's only Billboard Hot 100 number one. After Roth left in 1985, Sammy Hagar fronted the group through four consecutive US number-one albums, including 5150 and OU812. Roth returned for 2012's A Different Kind of Truth, which also featured Eddie's son Wolfgang on bass. Van Halen has sold over 56 million albums in the US and more than 80 million worldwide, ranking among the best-selling bands ever, and charted 13 number-one hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. Eddie Van Halen died of cancer in October 2020, after which the band was confirmed disbanded.
