History

Whitesnake are a British rock band formed in London in 1978 by singer David Coverdale, shortly after he left Deep Purple. Coverdale remained the band's only constant member across a lineup that rotated dozens of musicians over the decades. Early albums like Trouble (1978), Lovehunter (1979), Ready an' Willing (1980) and Saints & Sinners (1982) built the group's blues-rock reputation and reached the UK top ten. Chasing success in America, Whitesnake released Slide It In (1984) with a lineup that included future Dio and Quiet Riot alumni, then hit their commercial peak with the self-titled 1987 album (released as Whitesnake in the US). Its re-recorded single "Here I Go Again" topped the Billboard Hot 100, and the album sold over eight million copies in the US, boosted by MTV videos starring actress Tawny Kitaen, who later married Coverdale. The band earned a Best British Group nomination at the 1988 Brit Awards. After later reunions and albums including Good to Be Bad (2008) and Flesh & Blood (2019), Coverdale announced the band's retirement in 2025.
