History
Winger is an American hard rock band formed in New York City in 1987, built around bassist/vocalist Kip Winger, guitarist Reb Beach, drummer Rod Morgenstein and keyboardist Paul Taylor, later joined by guitarist John Roth. Blending glam and hard rock with unusually technical musicianship, the band signed to Atlantic Records and released its self-titled debut in 1988, which went platinum on the strength of singles "Seventeen" and "Headed for a Heartbreak." The 1990 follow-up, In the Heart of the Young, also went platinum and produced the hit "Miles Away"; that year the band earned an American Music Award nomination for Best New Heavy Metal Band. As grunge reshaped rock in the early 1990s, Winger's popularity faded after 1993's Pull, and the band split in 1994. They later reunited, touring from 2001 and releasing new albums from 2006 onward, most recently Seven in 2023. A lasting piece of trivia: in the 1990s, MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head made Winger a running punchline, with the character Stewart wearing a Winger t-shirt as a symbol of uncoolness, an association Kip Winger has since made peace with.
