History
Great White is an American hard rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1977. The band's name honors both the ocean predator and guitarist Mark Kendall's old nickname, earned for his pale complexion and white hair. Fronted by singer Jack Russell alongside Kendall, keyboardist/guitarist Michael Lardie, drummer Audie Desbrow, and original bassist Lorne Black, the group built a glam/hard-rock sound rooted in blues-rock riffing rather than the era's flashier pop-metal. Great White broke through commercially in the mid-to-late 1980s with the platinum albums "Once Bitten" (1987) and "...Twice Shy" (1989). Their biggest hit, a cover of Ian Hunter's "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," became their only gold-certified single and one of two Top 40 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, alongside "The Angel Song." By 2008 the band estimated worldwide sales near eight million records. The band's history took a tragic turn in 2003, when pyrotechnics at a Rhode Island club show sparked one of the deadliest concert fires in US history, killing 100 people, including band member Ty Longley.
