History
Scorpions are a German hard rock band formed in Hanover in 1965 by guitarist Rudolf Schenker, who remains the group's only constant member. The classic lineup crystallized by 1978 around Schenker, singer Klaus Meine, lead guitarist Matthias Jabs, bassist Francis Buchholz and drummer Herman Rarebell; an earlier guitarist, Rudolf's younger brother Michael Schenker, left in 1973 to join UFO and was eventually replaced by Uli Jon Roth. Through the late 1970s and 1980s the band became one of Europe's biggest hard rock exports, scoring hits such as "Rock You Like a Hurricane," "No One Like You" and "Still Loving You." Their most famous song, "Wind of Change," grew out of a 1989 performance at the Moscow Peace Festival and became a chart-topping anthem of the Cold War's end after its 1991 release. The band celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2025 with a world tour that returned to Hannover and stopped in Las Vegas.
