History
Kruiz formed in Moscow in the late 1970s (sources differ between 1978 and 1980), growing out of the state-run vocal-instrumental ensemble Molodiye Golosa. The original lineup included Alexander Monin on vocals, Valery Gaina on guitar, Alexander Kirnitsky on bass, Sergey Sarychev on keyboards, and Vsevolod Korolyuk on drums, playing soft and hard rock with Russian lyrics. In 1984, during a Soviet crackdown on rock music, the Ministry of Culture stripped the band of its license to perform. Guitarist Valery Gaina relaunched Kruiz in 1985 as a heavy metal act, taking over lead vocals himself. Their 1987 debut metal album, "Kruiz-1," reportedly sold around a million legal copies in the USSR. A 1988 English-language album on WEA Music Canada included the song "In Flames," which got notable airplay on the Canadian metal TV show The Power Hour. The band toured Russia, Europe, and North America before splitting in 1990; a non-metal lineup reunited in 1992, and Gaina staged a one-off metal reunion in 2016.
