History
Skid Row is an American heavy metal band formed in 1986 in Toms River, New Jersey, by guitarist Dave "Snake" Sabo and bassist Rachel Bolan, who rounded out the lineup with guitarist Scotti Hill and drummer Rob Affuso. With help from family friend Jon Bon Jovi, the band landed a deal with Atlantic Records and hired 19-year-old Canadian singer Sebastian Bach as frontman in 1987. Their self-titled 1989 debut went five-times platinum on the strength of "18 and Life," "I Remember You," and "Youth Gone Wild," fusing glam-metal hooks with a tougher, street-level edge. The 1991 follow-up, Slave to the Grind, made chart history as the first heavy metal album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 under the new SoundScan sales-tracking system. Bach was fired in 1996 amid mounting tension; the band has since toured and recorded with a series of other singers, currently Swedish vocalist Erik Gronwall, while Bolan, Sabo, and Hill remain the group's core members.
