History

Nazareth is a Scottish hard rock band formed in December 1968 in Dunfermline, Fife, growing out of the local group the Shadettes. The classic lineup - vocalist Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew, and drummer Darrell Sweet - took its name from the opening line of The Band's "The Weight" ("pulled into Nazareth"). After supporting Deep Purple on tour and working with Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover as producer on 1973's Razamanaz, the band broke through internationally with 1975's Hair of the Dog. The title track became a hard rock staple, later covered by Guns N' Roses, while the album's cover of the Everly Brothers ballad "Love Hurts" reached the US Top 10. Nazareth kept recording and touring for decades, though all four original members have since died or left: Darrell Sweet passed in 1999 during a US tour, Manny Charlton in 2022, and Dan McCafferty later that same year, leaving Pete Agnew as the sole original member still fronting the band.
