History

Foo Fighters are an American rock band formed in Seattle in 1994 by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, who started the project as a solo outlet for songs he had written but kept private during his years in Nirvana. Grohl recorded the self-titled debut almost entirely alone in 1995, then assembled a full lineup, including bassist Nate Mendel and guitarist Pat Smear, and the band built its career on melodic, hook-driven hard rock with a punk edge, spanning albums like The Colour and the Shape, One by One, Wasting Light, and But Here We Are. Longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins died in 2022, a loss the band later addressed directly in its music. The band's odd name comes from World War II-era slang pilots used for unexplained aerial phenomena. With 15 Grammy Awards, Foo Fighters are the most-awarded American band in Grammy history and hold the record for most wins in the Best Rock Album category. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
