History

Mana came out of Guadalajara with a version of rock sung in Spanish that made room for reggae, ballads and a strong melodic hook, and that combination turned them into the most widely heard Latin rock band on the continent. The sound rests on a clean, slightly nasal lead voice, guitar lines that borrow from British new wave as much as from Mexican pop, and a rhythm section that slips into a reggae lilt whenever the tempo drops. Rayando el Sol, an early song they never stopped playing, is close to a folk lament with a rock chorus. Clavado en un Bar turns a drinking story into an arena singalong. Labios Compartidos pairs a flamenco-tinged guitar figure with one of their heaviest choruses. The records keep production warm and uncluttered, with acoustic guitars audible under the electric ones. Environmental campaigning has run alongside the music for decades, tied to tours and to conservation work in Mexico.
